Bitonga Travel: Meet the Woman Behind the Vision to Connect Black Women Travellers in South America and the Caribbean

I’m aways excited to meet fellow female travellers, especially black female travellers – simply because there isn’t enough representation of us in a world full of wanderlusts and explorers… So when Rebecca reached out to me via Instagram and mentioned about a travel group she founded for Black women travellers South America and the Caribbean – I was intrigued to learn more!

simplesmente porque não somos suficientemente representadas num mundo cheio de viajantes e exploradores…Então, quando Rebecca me encontrou via Instagram e contou sobre um grupo de viagem para
mulheres negras na América do Sul e Caribe fiquei tentada a conhecer mais!

We arranged to meet at Ibirapuera Park, in São Paulo on a Tuesday afternoon. It wasn’t difficult to spot Rebecca with her distinctive braided hair style and statement blue lipstick which enhanced her bright smile. I took the opportunity to find out a bit more about her, Bitonga, and how other black Brazilian woman can find the means to travel too…

🇧🇷Nós combinamos de nos encontrar no Parque do Ibirapuera em São Paulo numa quinta-feira a tarde. Não foi difícil encontrar Rebecca, com seu belo cabelo trançado e batom azul que mostrou a que ela veio e que enaltece mais ainda seu sorriso iluminado. Eu aproveitei a oportunidade de saber um pouco mais sobre ela, Bitonga e como outras mulheres negras brasileiras encontram meios de viajar também…

Tell us a bit about yourself, who you are, where you’re from, your job

My name is Rebecca Aletheia, I’m from São Paulo – Brazil. I’m a nurse working with infection disease and I have a Master degree in Public Health. I am black woman traveller and I have been working to empower women to travel.

🇧🇷Conte um pouco sobre você, quem é você, de onde você é, seu trabalho

Meu nome é Rebecca Aletheia, sou de São Paulo – Brasil. Sou enfermeira, trabalhando com doenças infecciosas, e tenho Mestrado em Saúde Pública. Eu sou uma mulher negra viajante e tenho trabalhado para incentivar mulheres a viajar.

How is life as a black woman in Brazil?

To be a black woman in Brazil isn’t so easy, is so hard to stand up agains racism, sexism and xenophobia. Unfortunately our voices aren’t listen, they don’t think have racism in Brazil, to receive respect is so difficult, one example we don’t receive the equal salary by white people.

🇧🇷Como é a vida enquanto mulher negra no Brasil?

Ser mulher negra no Brasil não é nada fácil, é muito difícil lutar contra o racismo, sexismo e xenofobia. Infelizmente nossas vozes não são ouvidas, eles não acreditam na existência do racismo no Brasil e ser respeitada é muito difícil. Um exemplo disso é não recebermos salários iguais aos das pessoas brancas.

What opportunities give black women the means to travel?

Travel to me means ‘to go out of your home’. Why do I say that? For example in São Paulo, in the downtown you can find great monuments and so many cultural art but unfortunately the people from peripheral area can’t go there due to the distance. Secondly, they don’t have money and thirdly, they have never been there before. They do all their activity just in their community. This is very sad to say. this but it is common. It is the reason why sone travel is only available to those with money, and those who know how save money to go travel. Bitonga Travel come with the idea to just GO! Starting with moving close to you. It can encourage poor people start to save money, planning for their future travel.

🇧🇷Quais oportunidades são dadas às mulheres negras para viajar?

Viagem pra mim significa “sair da sua casa”. Por que eu digo isso? Por exemplo, no centro de São Paulo você pode encontrar monumentos incríveis e muita arte, mas infelizmente as pessoas da periferia não tem acesso por conta da distância. Segundo, eles não tem dinheiro e terceiro, eles nunca estiveram lá antes. Eles realizam suas atividades somente dentro da comunidade deles. É muito triste dizer isso, mas é muito comum. É a razão pela qual somente pessoas com dinheiro tem acesso a viagens e aqueles que sabem poupar dinheiro para viajar. Bitonga Travel trás a ideia de só IR! Começar com algo próximo a você. Isso pode encorajar pessoas pobres a começar a poupar dinheiro e planejar sua próxima viagem.

How did you get into travelling? What are your thoughts on the representation of ‘travellers’?

I start travel with 1 month of age, camping with my relatives, it was when I started! After this never stopped. My representation of travellers started with my family, black people/ black family traveling around São Paulo and Rio, by car. Of course we didn’t see other black people or black families traveling together and we always commented about this.

When I started travel solo I didn’t see black people, it was sad and the feeling can be lonely. My travels are diverse and at all opportunities I try to meet black people who live there. I have a funny history, I lived in Tajikistan 🇹🇯 On my birthday celebration we had 8 black people in the same place – we hadn’t seen each other for long time so many of us. Our culture and history is different – we like to have people like us close.

My travel are so much diverse; Argentina (north), Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Grenada, Cuba, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Turkey, South Africa, Mozambique, France, Spain, f Portugal and Germany.

🇧🇷Como você começou a viajar? O que você pensa sobre a representatividade entre os viajantes?

Eu comecei a viajar com 1 (um) mês de idade, acampando com a minha família, foi quando eu comecei!. Depois disso nunca parei. Minha representação de viajantes começou com minha família, pessoas negras, família negra viajando de carrro entre São Paulo e Rio. É claro que não víamos outras pessoas ou famílias negras viajando juntas e sempre comentamos sobre isso.

Quando eu comecei a viajar sozinha eu não via pessoas negras, era triste e a sensação era de solidão. Minhas viagens são diversas e em todas oportunidades eu tento conhecer pessoas negras que moram lá. Eu tenho uma história engraçada. Eu morei no Tajiquistão e no meu aniversário tínhamos 8 (oito) pessoas negras no mesmo lugar – e nós não tínhamos nos visto a muito tempo. Nossa cultura e história são diferentes – nós gostamos de ter pessoas como nós por perto.

Minhas viagens são muito diversas: norte da Argentina, Perú; Bolivia; Venezuela; Paraguai; Trinidad e Tobago; Panamá; Granada; Cuba; Tajiquistão, Uzbequistão; Cazaquistão; Quirguistão; Indonésia; Turquia; África do Sul; Moçambique; França; Espanha; Portugal e Alemanha.

Tell us one (or two) of your favourite places you’ve travelled to. Why was it so special?

Omg, all travels are special and I love it them because each has a specific challenge inside us. I always say the last is always is the best… But for me, Internationally – I love Turkey and Indonesia. In Brazil Jalapão and Lençóis Maranhenses is so wonderful.

🇧🇷Conte-nos um ou dois dos seus lugares favoritos pra onde você já viajou. Por que foi tão especial?

Ai meu Deus! Todas viagens são especiais e eu amo todas porque dentro de cada uma tem um desafio específico. Eu sempre digo que a última é sempre a melhor, mas pra mim, internacionalmente – eu amo a Turquia e a Indonésia. No Brasil, Jalapão e Lençóis Maranhenses são muito maravilhosos.

Have you travelled anywhere where you felt uncomfortable, ‘fetishised’ or an outsider?

All places I felt it… some places are more, like Central Asia was so hard to be an expressive black woman there.

🇧🇷Você já viajou para algum lugar onde você se sentiu desconfortável, fetichizada ou uma forasteira?

Em todos os lugares eu senti… em alguns lugares mais, como na Ásia Central onde foi muito difícil ser uma mulher negra expressiva.

Tell us about Bitonga Travel – why did you set it up and what is the aim?

Bitonga Travel started because I didn’t feel represented in the ‘social travellers’ on social media. I always meet black people traveling around with a wonderful stories and I was so sad when only I was a reference for black people. I would share their stories and say ‘Hey, I’m not alone! I can introduce you to different black travel women. Sometimes I had some difficult to share my experience with black people because some particularly is or particularity lile fetisheshed because I’m a black woman and Latin American. I am sure with black people it happens so much. When I can’t talk about my hair… I started to be uncomfortable and started to think about doing something for black travel women. Bitonga started just now to empower black woman in South American and the Caribbean. Women share your travel experiences, start to travel. We black women of Latin American and Caribbean – we travel too!

🇧🇷Conte-nos um pouco sobre Bitonga Travel – por que você começou e qual é o objetivo?

Bitonga Travel começou porque eu não me sentia representada dentro os ‘viajantes sociais’ nas mídias. Eu sempre conheci pessoas negras viajando com estórias incríveis e eu ficava muito triste quando só eu era referência para as pessoas negras. Eu compartilhava as estórias deles e dizia “Ei, você não está sozinho! Posso te apresentar para diversas mulheres negras que viajam. Algumas vezes eu tinha dificuldade em compartilhar minha experiencia com pessoas negras porque alguns me fetichizam por eu ser uma mulher negra latino americana. Eu acredito que isso aconteça muito com pessoas negras. Quando eu não posso falar do o cabelo…
Eu comecei a ficar desconfortável e comecei a pensar em fazer algo voltado para mulheres negras viajantes. Bitonga acabou de começar para empoderar as mulheres negras da América do Sul e do Caribe. Mulheres, compartilhem suas experiências de viagem, comecem a viajar. Nós, mulheres negras da América Latina e do Caribe – também viajamos!

Do you have any advice or tips?

My advice is GO!  When you cross your gate from your home – make it a ‘travel’; stop in a museum, at a monument and make a great moment of it! Travel is more than taking a flight;  you can do it by bus, boat, bicycle, walking, riding a horse!… the most important is GO! Go around to your village, city, country and around to the world – this space are yours. Come together and let exchange experience.

🇧🇷Você tem algum conselho ou dica?

Meu conselho é VÁ! Quando você cruza o portão de casa – faça disso uma “viagem”; pare num museu, num monumento e faça disso um grande momento. Viajar é mais do que pegar um voo; você pode fazer de ônibus,
barco; bicicleta; andando; cavalgando um cavalo!… O mais importante é IR! Vá ao redor do seu bairro, cidade, país e ao redor do mundo – esse espaço é seu. Venha e vamos trocar experiências.
